Reading and creating after school is a FUN way to extend learning, but also engage kids in PLAY.  Whether your kids are at home, in childcare, or in a formal after school program, they can have hours of creativity with the Rainy Day Activity Pak!

WHAT COMES NEXT? – Predictions, Reading, and Sequencing a Time-line of Events

Purpose:To encourage kids to higher level thinking strategies when listening to a book.

Before reading The Pout-Pout Fish, have the children make verbal predictions about the story. Invite the children to look at the book cover (front and back) and then write down all the predictions the children give.  While reading, stop several times and ask the children again what they think is happening in the book. The answers will differ slightly from the predictions at the beginning.   Did any of the children predict what the end character would be in the story? Prediction is a great strategy for engaging kids in the story as well as encouraging them to think about what the author is doing through the text and how the book will end.

The Pout-Pout Fish Craft with the Wikki Stix After School FUN Kit!

Materials needed:

  • One Fish Template per child (the Rainy Day Activity Pak comes complete with 15 Fish Templates so multiple children can enjoy creating at once)
  • Blue and Black Wikki Stix (colors are included in the FUN kit)

Invite the kids to decorate their own Pout-Pout fish using the fish template and blue/black Wikki Stix. The project is an open-ended challenge; the created fish will express the unique abilities and creative expression of each child.  The kids might ask how to design their Pout-Pout fish. Try to answer their questions with open-ended questions that will allow them to explore possibilities and come up with their own designs.

Extension Activity:  Create a Paper Plate Time-line of Events to Sequence the Story

Materials needed:

  • One (uncoated) Paper Plate per child (or small group)
  • Assorted Colors of Wikki Stix from the After School FUN Kit (the kit includes a total of 329 Wikki Stix for hours of creative play).

Invite the children to create the 5 ocean animals (clam, jellyfish, squid, octopus, and shimmery fish) and the SMOOCH from the book with Wikki Stix!  Older kids may wish to assist younger kids in creating the animals, too.  There is no wrong or right way to create the various items. Each child’s creations will be unique to their own abilities and interpretations.  After the children are finished creating, have them divide the paper plate into six sections with Wikki Stix (see photo).  Wikki Stix will adhere to the uncoated paper plate without the need for glue or tape.  Read the book again and pause to note when each of the ocean animals are introduced.  Have the kids create a paper plate time-line of events starting in the upper left hand corner and adding the creatures (and SMOOCH) to each section of the paper plate craft as they are introduced in the book. The kids will have fun following along and will often shout-out the next creature as it appears in the story.  The craft is a great way to reinforce sequencing and the concept of understanding a time-line of events in a simple story.

The Pout-Pout Fish Created Stick Puppets

Materials needed:

  • Craft Sticks or Paper Straws
  • The six created items from the activity above: Clam, Jellyfish, Squid, Octopus, Shimmery Fish, and the SMOOCH

To further extend the story, invite the kids to place the created items (from the activity above) on top of a craft stick or paper straw.  As the story is read, have a child hold up the ocean animals/SMOOCH as they are introduced in the book.

Kids will have FUN reading The Pout-Pout Fish and extending the story through hands-on creation and playful learning!  Be sure to check out the activities below, for a “dreary-weary” free after school time with Wikki Stix!
