Structure of an Atom

Structure of an Atom

An atom is the smallest particle of an element.

This atom was made using Wikki Stix….an easy medium for 3-D creativity. There are no other materials involved, and no glue or paste. The Wikki Stix adhere to each other with just fingertip pressure.

The neutrons and protons are each made by cutting a Wikki into a small piece and rolling it into a ball. Different colors identify the neutrons from the protons. The area in which they are clustered is called the nucleus.

Demonstrating the elliptical orbit of the electrons was done by twisting two long Wikki Stix together, and creating the desired shape. A small black Wikki was pressed into place, creating the electron.

The completed “atom” was pressed onto the paper to secure it.

Molecular Structure of Water

Simple display, made entirely of Wikki Stix on poster board.

A water molecule is made up of two Hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom, as demonstrated on this simple display. Water is shown as waves, perhaps on the ocean or in a lake, as well as in raindrops.
